Choose for the location first
The right concrete finish starts with where the surface will be used. A backyard patio, an outdoor walkway and an enclosed garage floor have different needs. Appearance matters, but exposure to rain, intended use and the feel underfoot should be part of the discussion before you select a finish.
Broom finish: a practical outdoor choice
A broom finish creates a visible brushed texture across the concrete. It is a familiar option for driveways, walkways and patios when you want a straightforward appearance. Texture can help with traction, but no finish makes a wet or icy surface slip-proof. Ask to see actual finished projects and discuss the direction and character of the broom texture.
Trowel finish: smoother building-floor surfaces
Troweling can produce a smoother surface used for many interior slabs and building floors. It should not be selected for an outdoor patio simply because it looks smooth. Exterior concrete exposed to freezing weather needs an appropriate mix and finishing approach; industry exterior-flatwork guidance cautions against hard steel-troweled exterior finishes. Discuss the building use, moisture exposure and any later flooring or coating before specifying the slab.
Stamped finish: pattern and decorative detail
Stamped concrete adds a patterned texture and can include color treatments or contrasting borders. It is useful when the design of the outdoor space is a priority. View both close-ups and wide photos: the pattern must work across the whole layout, not just a small sample. Ask how the selected finish and any sealer will be cared for.
Compare samples and expectations
Screen images can change how color appears. Share examples, then clarify the intended pattern, texture, border and finish in the scope. Discuss what happens where the new surface meets doors, steps or existing concrete. The same appearance may not be appropriate for every part of a property.
